To say the clock has just been set back 100 years is not an exaggeration… The Supreme Court ruling literally opens the door to a dangerous time machine, by allowing corporations to wield amazing influence on elections.
Keep in mind that the McCain-Feingold reforms cut across party lines… This ruling obliterates all of that… and has special interest groups dancing in the streets. It not only shows how important Supreme Court nominees actually are to upcoming elections, but how one party celebrates the influence of the conglomerate and the other party supports the individual.
To allow a corporation the “freedom of speech” the Supreme Court says it should be allowed, also means that the individual voices within those companies may be drowned out. What happens if you are a shareholder or even an employee that helped make a company what it is, yet you do not agree with where they are spending their “political” money? Sounds to me that your voice will be drowned out… and as such, so will the voices of millions of Americans.
Grass roots campaigns show us not only how difficult it is to raise money from a group of individuals, but also how important and rewarding it is when it works. Obama’s victory made most of us, especially those who voted for him and volunteered, feel like one person, one vote, one voice actually can and did make a difference… But those efforts can now be wiped out with a single sweep of a corporate pen onto a corporate check.
All of this comes on the heels of Brown’s election to the Senate. While he seems to be on the liberal side of conservatism, what is especially sad, is that the Republican celebration and hoopla is more about their ability to now filibuster than to actually do anything and be pro-active. A filibuster, by definition, is a stall tactic… it is literally an obstacle and a way to prevent a vote on something… So yet again, parts of Washington are celebrating the fact that they can avoid a vote, avoid finding a solution and in essence, avoid doing their job.
Gosh, do you think this is one of the main problems and things wrong with government???
A cousin of mine said something profound years back… something that has proven itself to be true, time and time again… It is sad and frustrating and makes me full of fury, although after yesterday, perhaps less full of sound that will actually be heard.
He said that government does not seem to solve many problems. They simply manage the problems and pass them on to the next guy. But the “next guys” are our children… and I think it is our absolute responsibility to try to solve as many problems as we can for them, for the future, for this country and for the world… Naive? Perhaps. But what is the point otherwise? What are we here for if not to make the world a better place? To help in situations of catastrophe, like Haiti, but also in times of calm. We are here to help each other, to fix problems and to leave things better than how we found them… not the same, out of laziness; or worse, out of setbacks, greed and the influence of nothing more than the almighty dollar.
Money does make the world go ’round. And it certainly decides who is elected and who is not… But let’s not let it make up people’s minds… especially those of our elected officials who are supposed to be representing the people… and all of the people… not just Cleveland, Madison and Wilson.
